About John Giaquinta

John Giaquinta has more than 30 years of telecommunications experience as a senior executive in operations and sales organizations, supporting several Fortune 500 companies. A data center expert, John brings a unique, and very vital, perspective to the UPSTACK advisory team.

John began his career at Sprint in the early 1980s. Later, he was Vice President of Sales Metropolitan Fiber Systems, Vice President of Operations and Network Deployment at BroadStream Communications, Executive staff member of Operations at WingCast (a joint venture between Qualcomm and Ford Motor Company), and then Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the largest San Diego data center. Noting the disadvantages of high space costs and rising electrical power costs for colocation clients in California, John decided to provide a cost-effective alternative.

In 2009, he started DataCenterAndColocation.com, one of the largest U.S. data center and colocation consultancies. DataCenterAndColocation.com’s goal was to better serve businesses with multi-vendor data center requirements across locations in multiple states or countries. The firm’s clients represent a cross-section of industries and a range of requirements, such as security, redundancy, disaster recovery, credit card processing, HIPAA compliance, managed services, and more. With its singular focus on data center and colocation services, and a steady stream of leads, the firm grew quickly earning a number of accolades, including the Gold Partner Award from Digital Realty Trust in 2018.

One of John’s most successful deployments was a joint venture with Qualcomm and Ford Motor Company. His team was responsible for designing, engineering, building, and deploying an in-vehicle telematics network in the United States and Canada. As Vice President, he was responsible for setting up wireless connectivity in those two countries, selecting and providing connectivity to two digital voice switches, designing and building two fully redundant data centers, and providing connectivity to two call centers. This entire network needed to be extremely scalable and resilient. With a support staff of approximately 50 engineers, a legal team of 2 attorneys, and several project managers, the project was completed, tested, and fully operational in two years.

John Giaquinta has a master’s degree in Nuclear Physics from San Diego State University and a master’s degree in Telecommunications Management from National University. Among other achievements, John serves as a subject matter expert advisor for global investors and data center providers, on the Directors’ Council at San Diego State University, and is a member of the Partnership Council for the American Cancer Society. John also serves as a member of the Nice Guys of San Diego, an organization providing services to local San Diegans in need of help.
